OUR STORY

We built the room we wished had existed.

Meaningful Emotion began with something our founder, Dr. Lastenia Francis, noticed in her work with BIPOC clients. People often knew they felt overwhelmed, angry, distant, tired, or like they were carrying too much, but they hadn't always been given the space to understand what was underneath those reactions. So much had been held through silence, overfunctioning, withdrawal, or simply being the person who kept going.

We wanted to create a different kind of room. One where people did not have to leave parts of themselves outside the door. A place where culture, family, identity, relationships, and lived experience can be part of the conversation. And where there was enough space to slow down and listen for the emotion underneath the reaction. Because when people can connect with what is really there, something shifts. Hurt becomes easier to name. Needs become clearer. Boundaries make more sense. Their voice becomes stronger. And with that comes more choice in how they advocate for themselves, ask others to show up, and be in relationship and community.

That is the heart behind the name Meaningful Emotion. We believe emotions carry information about what matters to us, what has hurt us, what we long for, and what we need. It is hard to ask someone else to show up for a need we have not yet learned how to recognize ourselves. That idea still shapes the practice today: helping people make sense of what they carry so they can move through their lives and relationships with more awareness, voice, and intention.

What we're here to help you do

TO BE SEEN

You should n’t have to edit yourself just to be understood in therapy. There is room here for what you love about your family and what has been difficult. For the parts of your culture that ground you and the expectations that may feel heavy, there is room here to explore them. For the things you have known for years and the things you are just beginning to name.

TO UNDERSTAND WHAT SHAPED YOU

We are interested in more than what is happening right now. We pay attention to the roles you learned to play, the ways your family handled emotion, the expectations you inherited, and the strategies that helped you get through difficult seasons. Understanding where something came from doesn't mean you have to keep living by it.

PRACTICE SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Insight matters, but eventually something has to shift. That may mean learning to say what you need without disappearing or exploding. Letting someone support you without feeling weak. Repairing after conflict instead of avoiding it. Setting a boundary without cutting someone off. Or making choices based on who you are now rather than who you had to be before. Therapy gives us a place to practice those changes until they begin to feel more natural outside the room.

What we believe

People make sense in context.

Repair matters more than perfection.

Culture, family, and identity belong in the clinical conversation.

Healing is relational.

Strength and softness can coexist.

Representation in this field matters.

How we practice

We are intentional about the clinicians who join Meaningful Emotion because the relationship you have with your therapist matters. Our therapists are warm, thoughtful, and engaged. They bring their clinical judgment, personality, and full presence into the room while keeping the work centered on you. We value neutrality when neutrality protects the space for you to think, feel, and make your own choices. But we do not confuse neutrality with being context-free. Culture, race, family, identity, power, and lived experience are not things we ask you to leave at the door. Our therapists will notice them, talk about them, and consider how they shape your life and relationships. You can expect to be supported, but not simply agreed with. We may slow you down, ask a harder question, point out a pattern, or invite you to consider something differently. The goal is not to tell you what to think. It is to help you see more clearly so you can decide what fits for you. Our clinicians will not all feel exactly the same, and we do not want them to. What should feel consistent is that you are taken seriously, your context matters, and your therapist is willing to show up fully for the work.
